With my abysmal review of Popeyes, I was just going to skip over KFC because I did not think that they could be any better. Well, much to my surprise, they actually ARE better, in fact, MUCH better than their chickeny alternative.
The first and foremost thing that I found better, was that KFC doesn’t cook their fried food in lard like Popeyes does. They cook all of their food in canola or soybean oil, and although they might cook their vegan goods in the same fryer as chicken, buying it doesn’t increase demand of chicken.
So what food does KFC have that is vegan? Their vegan options include:
- Corn on the cob (w/o butter)
- Sweet kernel corn
- Green beans
- Potato Wedges
- Apple sauce
- House Side Salad
- BBQ Baked Beans (where available)
I actually liked the idea of baked beans being a protein-rich vegan option, as in most fast food places, vegans have to deal with nothing but carb-rich options and that’s it. However, it seems like not all KFC locations have baked beans, and it might not even be available in the US… sadly… however, it does seem as if their signature KFC gravy is vegan.
If you are vegetarian, there are some options available to you all as well, which includes all of the options previously listed above. These include:
- Cornbread Muffins
- Mac and cheese
- Mashed Potatoes
- Most desserts.
While I have to praise KFC for their large swath of vegan options that their competitor does not have, it does make me sad that they don’t have baked beans available everywhere. Their fries are awesome though, and if you can get the baked beans, mixing them with the fries and a side of corn or green beans can make a pretty balanced meal… well, balanced when it comes to fast food anyways.
