How To Make: Falafel

Cooking falafel from chickpeas

I never had falafel before and thought I was going to hate it. I have tried eating chickpeas on various occasions and just never liked the taste or the texture of the peas (even though it makes pretty edible curry). I was going to have some for my wedding reception but got other things instead. I just wanted to make sure I liked them before spending a ton of money on them.

Let me get on with the recipe, as I hate recipe guides that tell you 4000 words of storyline before they even get to the recipe.

What you need:

  • Chickpeas
  • Flour
  • Frying Oil
  • Spices (I use oregano, salt, pepper, cilantro, onion salt, garlic salt, etc. Simple spices, add whichever spices suit your taste buds)

First, you get a food processor or blender, drain a can of chickpeas (or cook them from dry, but that is too much work for me.) Add spices, mine were oregano, seasoned salt, garlic salt, and onion salt with a bit of soy sauce, and add a few tablespoons of flour so it holds together, and blend it up!

Cooking falafel from chickpeasThen, roll the chickpea dough into small balls, probably about the size of a ping pong ball or golf ball.

VERY IMPORTANTLY: put them in the fridge for about 10 to 15 minutes. This is important so the balls retain their shape and not break apart in the oil. During this time, heat some a small pan with some oil (You can bake them too, but frying them makes them taste sooo good!)

Once the balls are cool, add them to the oil, at which time they should immediately boil. If the oil is boiling before you put the falafel balls in, the oil is far too hot.

In my case, the oil only went about half way up the falafel, so after 5 minutes I flipped them over. Cooked for another 5 minutes, and then took them out. Let cool for about 5 to 10 minutes, unless you want to burn your tongue off.

A can of chickpeas costs me about 70 cents to a dollar, and the rest of the ingredients were just pennies each. I would say this whole recipe might have cost me a dollar, maybe less. For me, it’s two meals, as I can’t eat all of the felafels I make at once. However, I do find that mixing some BBQ sauce with a small amount of mustard makes a pretty good dipping sauce.

This recipe contains 20 grams of protein, and is high in manganese, folate, copper, zinc, and iron! If you choose to bake them instead of frying them, you can also make this a low fat and lower calories meal!

This is a great recipe if you are on a budget!
