Taco Bell Serves Cage-Free Eggs… Why?

Taco Bell is one of the many fast food joints promising to go cage-free when it comes to their eggs,

Now I know that cage-free is better than caged when it comes to chickens, but that’s like the difference between a small room and a larger room in a concentration camp when it comes to ethical treatment of animals.

Cage-Free still kills all male chicks from birth, have part of their beaks burned off, are slaughtered at less than 2 years of age, and many are still starved to force molting. But hey, it’s humane… right? I mean, that’s the reason Taco Bell is going Cage-Free, according to their Press Release:

“Cage-free egg production supports the natural behaviors of hens, including walking, spreading of wings, nesting, and perching, and can lead to animals exhibiting lower levels of stress.”

Forgetting that Cage-free looks like this:

This being “Humane” and “Natural” is like cutting off the tips of the fingers of a bunch of humans and putting them in a location like this:

Looks humane, right? At least they are not in a cage!

A more nutritional/health argument would be that Cage-free or not, the eggs sold at places like Panera, Burger King, and Taco Bell still use the egg Yolk, which is filled with saturated fat and other unhealthy substances. It would be better for them to take out the egg yolk altogether and make their egg burritos with pure egg whites. To me it would probably be better to just stop eating eggs altogether, but egg-whites can easily be incorporated into a healthy diet if eaten in moderation.

I know that eggs are a cultural part of breakfast, but in terms of health, it might just be better to switch over to Tofu instead.
